Design Principles: Event Mock Up

In my class we were to create an original event and/or recreate an event that is already out there but it had to be completely original. One of my heroes is Oprah Winfrey. I absolutely enjoyed her character and Whoopi Goldberg's characters in The Color Purple. I love the feeling I get whenever I watch the movie. This was the movie that caused me to have a lifelong appreciation for purple.
“I may be Poor, I may be Black, I may be ugly, but dammit I’m here. I'm here!”

My Concept Idea: (posted in class, also)

The event that I chose to create is semi fictional. It is based on the Broadway musical 'The Color Purple' and the Oprah Winfrey fund-raising campaign. I am taking almost the same approach but not exactly. The original idea was that they had performed the musical for 3 nights per town and the proceeds went to Katrina victims. My idea is to turn it into a festival of 3 days in my hometown at the Joyce Center in South Bend that the proceeds from it go to disadvantaged schools and poverty-ridden children of the community. The name of the event is called “And I Am Here!” Festival. It derives from Celie's (character in the musical/book/movie) line to Mister after taking ownership that she is a person too. The target audience is males and females ranging from 16 – Seniors with a hierarchy background of African American but making it other cultures friendly. It also wants to target higher financial means groups. Since the Joyce Center can house thousands of people, the festival will have one major performance going 4 times a day of the musical with other entertainment and charitable functions for the cause that people from all around can attend. The primary message is the expression that You Are Here Too, the secondary is that We Are Our Voice, Rise Up! Disadvantaged schools and poverty-ridden children can't exactly rise up on their own without the help of their communities.

These two images were used for the first two concepts. The sunflower's white background was taken out to fit it in. The second one, the girls hand clapping was to re-create Celie and her sister Nettie hand clapping. I cut out the background and color overlayed them black.

Shug Avery's speech to Celie gave me the idea to work will a field of purple and a purple flower. Please read the quote:

"Shug Avery- God love all them feelings. That’s some of the best stuff God did. And when you know God loves ‘em you enjoys ‘em a lot more. You can just relax, go with everything that’s going, and praise God by liking what you like.
Celie- God don’t think it dirty? I ast.
Shug Avery- Naw, she say. God made it. Listen, God love everything you love — and a mess of stuff you don’t. But more than anything else, God love admiration.
Celie- You saying God vain? I ast.
Shug Avery- Naw, she say. Not vain, just wanting to share a good thing. I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.
Celie- What it do when it pissed off? I ast.
Shug Avery- Oh, it make something else. People think pleasing God is all God care about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.
Celie- Yeah? I say.

Shug Avery-Yeah, she say. It always making little surprises and springing them on us when us least expect.
Celie- You mean it want to be loved, just like the bible say.
Shug Avery- Yes, Celie, she say. Everything want to be loved. Us sing and dance, make faces and give flower bouquets trying to be loved. You ever notice that trees do everything to git attention we do, except walk?"

I wanted to dramatize the purple flower theme to display a romantic theme since romance is love. And the event, tho fictional, is love. I cut out the flower and gray scaled the original image. Set the colored flower on the gray photo.

As you see in the first image of 6 thumbnails and the back of the postcard versions, that is what I came up with. We had to go off our classmates opinions and the instructor's to pick our top two concepts.

These were the two that I chose. But I have to get rid of the curve text and apply some of the ideas from my classmates and instructors to get my two rough drafts but I think I will be making 4 rough drafts. Two for each image. I also have to work on the back of the postcard. I think I might use the sunflower again for it but make it purple.
